Temple, Texas Hospital

Did you know that Temple has more physicians per capita than any other city in the country? This is according to the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. The TAMHSC’s Temple campus is partnered with Baylor Scott & White, which is not only the most prominent Temple, Texas hospital, but is the hospital for the vast majority of Central Texas residents.

The Baylor Scott & White Memorial Hospital, in some form or another, has been a community mainstay for over a hundred years. It is named after its founders, Dr. Arthur C. Scott, Sr. and Dr. Raleigh R. White, Jr., who established their medical practice in Temple at the tail end of the 19th century. That practice has since grown into one of the country’s most highly regarded health care systems.

Scott & White Memorial Hospital

Today, Baylor Scott & White is not only the preeminent Temple, Texas hospital, it is also one of the region’s largest employers. As a whole, the health care industry is one of Central Texas’ top industries in terms of employment and is second only to the military. Job growth in this sector is steady and ever-increasing, which is good news for health practitioners who are considering moving to the area.

With a service area of 29,000 square miles, the Scott & White system provides comprehensive services through a wide range of hospital sites and clinics. The main medical center in Temple is the only Level I Trauma Center that you will find between Austin and Dallas and also serves as the main clinical teaching facility of TAMHSC.

Baylor Scott & White has earned numerous accolades throughout the years and continues to reap awards from various organizations. Recently, it earned its 9th Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corporation, it was named one of the country’s Top 100 Hospitals and Top 100 Systems by Thomson Reuters (2012), and one of the best hospitals in the Prairies and Lakes region two years in a row by U.S. News & World Report (2012 and 2013).

A notable recent addition to the Baylor Scott & White system is the McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White. The 64-bed facility opened in 2011 and serves as the sole acute care pediatric hospital between Austin and Dallas.
